[Vaud] - Les Loix Et Statuts Du Pays de Vaud, Avec Un Repertoire Tres Exact

Berne [Bern, Switzerland], Nic. Emanuel Haller, 1730. Leather Bound. pp. 591, index. 12mo. At the end of the book is a comprehensive index (unpaginated, containing 39 pages). The text is curiously numbered, as the printer has assigned two page numbers to each page. Hence, although the text is numbered to page 591, there are actually only half that number of pages. The volume is bound in period sheep, with considerable wear to the board edges. The word 'Goutum' is stamped to a leather label affixed to the spine. The endpapers are marbled, and on the front pastedown is affixed an armorial bookplate of Robert Derret. The first blank page is overwritten in French, in a nice 18th, or 19th, century hand. The facing page recounts, in a different hand but still in French, a presentation of this book in 1748. The last blank page contains some scribbled notes above a 1744 date. The remainder of the book shows some page darkening and foxing throughout, but it is not untoward, and the text remains perfectly legible. The binding is tight. The Canton of Vaud is the third-largest of the the Swiss cantons by population and fourth in size. It is located in Romandy, the French-speaking western part of the country. The capital is Lausanne. At the time of the publication of this book, Vaud was under the (unwelcome) jurisdiction of the German-speaking Bernese (headquartered in Bern); however the text of this volume is in French. It is divided into three parts, all of which deal with the 'Coustumier' or customary laws of the 'country' of Vaud. .
